A photograph taken out of focus is not very pleasing to look at.  Likewise, a Christian who has lost his focus is equally displeasing.  The writer of Hebrews instructs us with these words:

“Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.” Hebrews 12:1-2

In this fast paced society, it is easy for Christians to get distracted by all the things around them. Maybe you have noticed the same thing.  It is easy to get overwhelmed with your job, the kids, and even hobbies. Most moms spend half their time running from one soccer field to the next, while still trying to squeeze in responsibilities at home.  And often Dads are so busy at work that they can barely keep their heads above water. Where has the time gone that was once spent with the Lord?

The writer of Hebrews tells us to “lay aside” those encumbering weights that distract us from Christ. Throughout Church History, some have taken this to mean that they should sell all their worldly possessions and move into a monastery to lead a life of secluded meditation and prayer.  That is not what the writer of Hebrews had in mind.  Rather, this verse teaches us to have a right perspective on life. To have a job is not a sin; neither is taking the kids to soccer practice.  However, when those things begin to dominate your life, they become “encumbering weights,” and you are in serious danger of loosing your focus.

So, how can you keep a right focus in life?  Hebrews 12:2 teaches you how.  Live your life looking unto Jesus. That is to make Christ your Prophet, Priest, and King, your Guide, Saviour, and Master. Look unto Jesus as your all in all. Your focus must be on Jesus Christ and everything He has done for you in the Gospel.
